Abstract: Abstract The study investigated classroom management strategies for students’ academic achievement in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 7,425 teachers in the 268 public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. A sample size of 380 teachers was used for the study. The Taro Yamen technique for minimum sample size determination was used to obtain the sample size. A 14-item instrument titled “Classroom Management Strategies for Students’ Academic Achievement Questionnaire (CMSSAAQ)” was used for collecting data. The questionnaire was structured using the five point modified Likert rating scale response pattern of Very High Extent (VHE) = 5 points, High Extent (HE) = 4 points, Moderate Extent (ME) = 3 points, Low Extent (LE) = 2 points and Very Low Extent (VLE) = 1 point. The face and content validity of the questionnaire were assessed by two experts in measurement and evaluation. The reliability of the instrument was determined through test-retest technique. The Pearson Product Moment Correlation Statistics was used to arrive at a reliability index of 0.80. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while z-test was used to test the null hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. The study found that male and female teachers agreed that appropriate use of time allotted for instructions and manageable class size as classroom management strategies to a high extent enhances students’ academic achievement in public senior secondary schools in Rivers State. 3 Title: THE NIGER DELTA REGION AND PEACE-BUILDING INITIATIVES.pdf
Author: CHIZOR WISDOM DIKE
Abstract: Abstract The Niger Delta presents an interesting case study in peace-building. Every society must maintain social harmony in order to experience peace, and development. Individuals, groups, households, communities and companies must locate their quest for survival and growth within an atmosphere of peace. The Niger Delta region has intractable conflict issues which has enabled government, organizations and institutions at all levels to focus attention, energy and resources in ways and means of attaining sustainable peace in the region. As economically and politically important as the Niger Delta is to all stakeholders, the pathways of peace must be consciously directed. This paper argues that the achievement of peace is both a goal of development and a condition for social progress and co-existence. We adopted a survey method which enabled us to look at the various peace-building efforts initiated over time in the Niger Delta. Our conclusion is that peace-building is an ongoing process and must be institutionised to achieve desired outcomes. Some recommendations have been made as measures for preventing conflict, promoting peace, reducing conflicts, reconciling aggrieved stakeholders and enhancing sustainable development in the region. 6 Title: ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AND MATERNAL MORTALITY IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: SATURDAY, ODEPELI & NYE, ORUWARI PhD
Abstract: Abstract This study examines the consequences of environmental pollution on maternal mortality in Nigeria with emphasis on the proliferation of pollutants in most nooks and cranes of the country. Data for the study are generated from secondary sources of World Development Indicator and Central of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin of various issues. The data is analyzed using the Toda-Yamamoto estimation technique for the analysis. The study used maternal mortality rate as the dependent variable while carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and particulate matter are used as the main explanatory variables for environmental pollution, whereas government expenditure on health is used as check or control variable. The finding reveals that carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide and particulate matter do not have causal effect on maternal mortality in Nigeria within the period of study. Implying that environmental pollution do not contribute to maternal deaths in Nigeria within the period of study. Although the impact of environmental pollution considering the status of the result is not the focal cause of maternal mortality in Nigeria in the period of study, the study recommends the following in order to achieve a better and healthier environment. Tree planting is one of the best means of mitigating the impact of environmental pollution because of its absorptive nature. On this premise, tree planting should be made a priority in the local, state and federal levels. Also, products that utilize solar energy, wind energy, hydro energy and other renewable product should be made tax free in order to encourage mass production. 7 Title: AN ANALYSIS OF THE MENACE OF KIDNAPPING IN NIGERIA THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC DISCOURSE.pdf
Author: EMMANUEL UGOCHUKWU NWAKANMA, PhD.
Abstract: Abstract Kidnapping in its modern form in Nigeria has been traced to 2006 when the kidnapping expatriates in the oil producing Niger Delta started, and since then till now, the perpetrators have been modifying their means of operation as it has been manifesting in different forms and spaces. Between 2020 and 2022, the Fulani-Herdsmen/Farmers conflict in Nigeria has heightened and gotten complicated with kidnapping as one of its manifestations. In the Isuikwuato, Abia state, South East of Nigeria, kidnapping has crippled economic and social life in the local government and citizen’s move with fear of the unknown. This study therefore explored the relationship between the Fulani-Herdsmen/Farmers conflict and kidnapping, the impact of economic status on kidnapping and the effect of societal values on the kidnappers’ behavior. Using a descriptive survey, the study employed a multistage sampling method to draw 362 samples from the total population of Isuikwuato LGA. Primary data was collected with the use of questionnaire, and subjected to descriptive analysis using means and standard deviation to describe data around the objectives of study, while the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used in testing the three research hypotheses. The study’s findings show a significant relationship between the Fulani-Herdsmen/Farmers conflict and kidnapping; a significant impact of economic status on kidnapping; and a significant relationship but negative effect of societal values on the kidnappers’ behavior. Therefore the study concludes that crime in general and kidnapping as we see it in Nigeria and Isuikwuato in particular, did not start and will not end with solving the Fulani-Herdsmen/Farmers conflict, but with a wholesome look at the socio-economic situation of the country. 11 Title: EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT-EXAMINING THE EDUCATION-COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT NEXUS IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: TAYLOR, TAMUNOSAKI (Ph.D)
Abstract: This research paper qualitatively examines the concepts of education and rural development, differentiated education and “training” or “schooling”, the implication of the rural development praxis against the object of education in the community development of Nigeria. This paper views education as not just a tool for rural development, but the most fundamental tool for rural development. However, the paper discovered that in Nigeria like in other developing countries, education has not been able to play this role of community development optimally. Findings from this paper reviews that, the reason for this underdevelopment is due to the dissonance between the educational curriculum and developmental needs of the communities. The paper thus recommends a critical re-examination of the extant development praxis and harmonizes it with the socio-cultural and environmental realities in the polity and to design an appropriate educational curriculum.
