Abstract: This article evaluates the Umhlanga festival and the prospects of development in Swaziland. The Umhlanga tradition has a feminine touch and this increases the prospects of development in Swaziland in many ways and especially the fact that gender norms is the fundamental contributor to the severe poverty that is hampering development in Swaziland. The objectives of the study are to assess the Umhlanga traditions in the light of the prospects of development in Swaziland. Umhlanga is a feminine tradition that metamorphoses into the building and renovating of the windbreaks in the Ndlovukati community. The study aims at synergizing the Umhlanga traditions with the prospects of development for the common good of Swaziland. Accordingly the research questions of the study are: What is the connectivity between Umhlanga festival and the feminisation of poverty? What is development and what are the development prospects in Swaziland? Why is the rate of poverty very high in Swaziland? How can women empowerment be a panacea to development in Swaziland? The study is guided by the theoretical framework of Structural Functionalism. Major proponents of the theory are Talcott Parsons and Robert Merton. The qualitative research methodology consisting of content and documentary analysis of data was adopted for the study. The study recommends that Umhlanga traditions should translate into cultural laws that will conscientiously empower women for socio-economic development in Swaziland. Government should painstakingly address gender issues especially with regards to the laws that deprive women access to the means of production. View

Author: THOMAS IMOUDU GOMMENT, PhD.
Abstract: No too individuals are the same, not even identical twins. In a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country like Nigeria, conflict is bound to exist. With about 400 tribes and 250 ethno-linguistic groupings in Nigeria from different socio-cultural background, sentiments along different dimensions is enough force to trigger rancour and acrimony of different colouration, each of the groupings striving for dominance, relevance and prominence in the scheme of things. This paper is an attempt at exposing the violent conflict-infested nature of Nigeria. Despite efforts made and measures put in place by successive governments to ensure peace, conflicts of different magnitude abound. Some measures put in place to foster unity and peace in Nigeria include: quota system, Federal Character Commission, derivation and amnesty programme for oil producing states, National Youth Service Corps, Federal Unity Schools, zoning formula, freedom of speech and association, citizenship and the inclusion of peace and conflict resolution in school curriculum, among others. Some of the violent conflicts that characterize Nigeria include but not limited to the following: identity-based violence such as ethnic, religious, indigene/settler claims as well as politically-motivated crises in different parts of Nigeria. Others include: Fulani herdsmen/farmers crisis, militancy in the Niger Delta and Insurgency in the North Eastern parts of Nigeria. The paper recommended peace education and the restoration of African cherished social values characterized by philosophy of ‘live and let live’, being one’s  brother’s keepers, community fellow-feelings, respect for human lives, tolerance, integrity and hospitality as the sure way to enthrone sustainable peace in Nigeria. Author: TONGA, AHMED ABDULLAHI
Abstract: Digital and information technologies are having tremendous impact on the world today. The impacts of digital technology on members of the society and their influences on economic, religious and social aspect, as well as their impact on peoples behavior are not in question. This has resulted in radical change in every aspect of human life. The aim of this paper was to examine the role of digital technology in societal development as evident today. using the desktop approach, the study argued that the more advanced technologies become, the more it seems to have control over our lives and development and since human beings are social by nature, relationships nowadays become more dominated by the use of modern technologies such as social media, which reduces the distances while accepting that they are equally having negative effects on human face-to-face relationships in society and family. The paper recommends amongst others that; government should push for the efficiency of digital technologies in every sector of the country’s economy just as we have CBN, NNPC, NCC, NPA create active and responsive online presence, where quick and accurate data and information could be obtainable and used for providing solution to societal problems. 10 Title: ADDRESSING THE MAJOR CHALLENGES ENCOUNTERED BY FIRST YEAR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS OF HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS OF LEARNING.pdf
Author: ABRAHAM ORIJI, PhD. AND ALFRED, DAKORU OSONKUME, PhD.
Abstract: Education has been said to be the bedrock of any progressive nation, and any nation that neglects its education sector and especially, ignores educating her citizenry is bound to remain underdeveloped among nations of the world. Many citizens today, knowing the importance of education for self and national development, desire to acquire university education. Many scholars have attested that transition from secondary school to a higher intuition is “an extremely multifaceted occurrence,” which requires serious adjustment and re-adjustment to a new set of academic, financial burden, and social systems. The first year in the university or any higher educational institution of learning is usually a new or first start for students. For many students, it may be the first time they are stepping out of their homes. Within this period, these freshmen acquire new experiences and understandings. Nonetheless, this journey is often accompanied with lots of challenges that require serious attention, which, if not properly guided or controlled will lead to withdrawals and failures. Consequently, this position paper attempts to highlight the major challenges encountered by first year undergraduate students in educational institutions of higher learning. The authors also tried to find out why the challenges, and suggest major useful remedial measures that negatively affect the performance of first year undergraduate students in the universities in order to enhance their academic performance, and reduce the number of dropouts and failures in any of their chosen careers. 11 Title: CLIMATE CHANGE GLOBAL WARMING AND SOCIAL CHALLENGES IN CONTEMPORARY WORLD AFRICA’S PERSPECTIVE.pdf
Author: IGONOH, JOSHUA A., PhD.
Abstract: That Africa, like all other continents within the global family contributes to climate change and global warming is  no longer in doubt, but how to fill the gap between Africa and the developed world on the contextual understanding of the causes of climate change has been a Jinx that the international community has not taken out a serious thought upon. For this reason, Africa is often schemed out of most global planning’s on how to address this 21st century threat to humanity. This paper stressed the need to explore Africa’s cultural contextual understanding of the causes and implication of climate change because of the strategic place Africa occupies in the causes and solution to this scourge; insisting that an over-dependence upon foreign data could create psychological distance on the risk perception of climate change between Africa and the more developed continents of the world. The significance of carrying Africa along is stressed by the fact that where, in the past, Africa’s perception of global challenges were sidelined,  the rest of international community was known to catch cold from the sneezing effect of Africa in form of some endemic diseases, poverty, drought and flood. Thus, the paper recommended that to ensure impactful utility value of world effort at tackling climate change, such effort must resonate within the framework of cultural and social understanding of all stakeholders because, to do otherwise may be counterproductive. Key Words: Climate Change, Global Warming, Social Challenges and Africa’s Perspective View
12 Title: GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA CAN ACHIEVE GOOD GOVERNANCE THROUGH GOOD MANAGEMENT.pdf
Author: JOHN NKEOBUNA NNAH UGOANI
Abstract: Poor public management defined by corruption and lack of prudence in public life continues to hold Nigeria hostage and makes it incapable of providing good governance. Since the 1980s government has been using many methods including the processes of privatization and commercialization as means of re-engineering the public sector for total quality management, and to increase the share of the public sector’s contribution to the gross domestic product. The experiment never achieved the desired level of success partly due to lack of political will on the part of government to wedge a total war against corruption, and also partly because the public sector is a large scale administration that has many entry and revolving doors which government finds difficult to close. These limitations provide the incentives for widespread public corruption that is recognized as one of the greatest challenges of government in carrying out its mandate. The issues of budget deficits, crude oil theft, huge tax evasion and suppression, payroll fraud, connivance by legislators and government leaders in frustrating government interests are among the major elements of corrupt practices that push up cost of governance. The implication is that when cost of governance is high the government becomes castrated and unable to provide sustainable basic services. Literature suggests that good management paradigm characterized by prudence and innovation can be a catalyst for achieving good governance within the framework of public accountability and transparency. 110 respondents participated in this study conducted through the exploratory research design. The participants provided useful data that were triangulated with data from secondary sources for the purpose of the study. To achieve the objective of the investigation, data were analyzed through descriptive and regression techniques and the result showed significant positive correlation between good governance and good management. It was recommended that appointments in the public sector should feature a combination of people from private and public sectors of the economy to enhance competence with the aim of reducing public sector corruption. Further study should examine the reasons behind rising budget deficits as a way of reducing cost of governance in Nigeria.              Keywords: New public management, Public sector, Widespread public corruption, Re-engineering the public sector, Large scale administration, Prudence, Sustainable services, Poverty, Corporatization, Administrative irresponsibility. Abstract: Abstract The article presents the results of the first backcrossing of F2 hybrids with genetic male sterility (GMS) for indicators of economically valuable traits. The influence of the genotypes of our varieties was very significant. The backcrossing results were analyzed according to the length of the growing season, the yield of fiber, the length of the fiber, the mass of raw cotton in one box, micronaire and the susceptibility to wilt involving backcrossing hybrid combinations or involving domestic cotton varieties C-6524, C-2609, Omad, An-512, An Bayavut-2, 108-F, Bukhara-6 and Indian variety specimens with a sign of genetic male sterility S-5001, S -5003, S-5007, S-5095, S-5097. The researchers set the goal of studying the effect of genotypes after the first backcrossing in F2. The best of the 35 combinations studied, the 34th combination with the participation of the Omad variety was the most precocious, in combination with fiber No. 2, 7, 24 and 28 they showed a rather high yield at the level of 34-35%., in combination with No. 7 along the fiber length , 14, 21, 23 had a fiber length of 34 mm and above. The most large-boxed plants were hybrid combinations under No. 7, 8, 15, 21, 22 and 29, in which this indicator was higher than 6 g.
