Author: Lovelyn Erinma Idigba, PhD
Abstract: Abstract The study investigated analysis of problem based learning strategy and senior secondary school students’ academic performance in teaching and learning of Commerce in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Three research questions and three null hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted quasi-experimental design. A sample of 400 SS2 students was used for the study. Three instruments were formulated for the study: Commerce Achievement test, Commerce Interest Questionnaire and Active Participation Questionnaire were used for the data collection. Face, content and construct validity was made by the supervisor and two other experts. The reliability was ascertained using Cronbach alpha method which yielded an index of 0.76 and Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used and an index of 0.82 was obtained. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while ANCOVA was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 Alpha level of significance. Findings revealed that there is a significant difference in students’ academic performance in urban and rural schools taught Commerce with PBL. The null hypothesis that there is no significant difference students’ academic achievement of urban and rural schools taught commerce with PBL was rejected; there is no significant difference between the retention scores of students taught Commerce using PBL and those taught using Conventional Teaching Method (Expository Method) was rejected and lastly there exists significant difference in the active participation scores of students in the PBL and Conventional Teaching Method (Expository Method)group. The null hypothesis was rejected. It was concluded that the use of problem based learning strategy enhances students’ interest, achievement in Commerce and also improves their retention of learnt material. This strategy is efficacious, learner-oriented and allows active participation than the conventional strategy which is passive and teacher-centred. Based on the findings: it was recommended that seminars and workshops should be organized for Commerce teachers in elementary and secondary schools to use Problem-based learning in the classroom, Commerce teachers should endeavour to give female and male students equal opportunities in the classroom. Author: Samuel O. Wagbara, PhD & Oboh Roseline Ohwomrohwo
Abstract: Abstract This study investigated students’ motivation and their academic achievement in senior secondary school chemistry in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. Also, the influence of gender on the academic performance of students was examined. The research was quasi- experimental pretest-posttest control group design. Two research questions guided the study and two hypotheses were tested. The instrument used to elicit response for the study was a class test to compare performance of students motivated (experimental group) and students unmotivated (control group) for the two schools selected. The population of the study was 2000 students. The sample for the study comprised 200 Chemistry students (100 male and 100 female) from two public senior secondary schools in Rivers state, Nigeria. The technique for the sample selection was random assignment of intact classes to sample groups. Data collected were analysed using both descriptive (mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Analysis of Covariance, ANCOVA). The statistical significance of the hypotheses was tested at a = 0.05. The findings of "the study showed that the academic achievement of motivated students were better than their counterparts. However, there is significant difference in the motivated and unmotivated students.Gender does not have significant effect on mean achievement score of motivated students in chemistry. Based on the research findings, recommendations were made on the need for Chemistry teachers to use instructions that are innovative, activity-based and student-centred in order to engage students for a better academic upliftment also, Modern facilities and technologies should be provided by the Government as instructional materials for effective teaching of chemistry in schools. 6 Title: TEACHER TRAINING FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE UBE SCHEME IN RIVERS STATE PRIMARY SCHOOLS, NIGERIA..pdf
Author: Tamunodienye N. Mba PhD & Hellen Sokari A-Okujagu PhD
Abstract: Abstract The UBE scheme had clear provisions for a dependable primary education and teacher training to underline and guide its implementation. Although it was inaugurated in 1999, the programme could not take off until 2004 when the UBE Act was signed; thus full implementation was experienced in 2005. (FRN, 2005). This followed the appropriation of the UBE fund to the UBE Commission and its subsequent disbursement to the States. Since 2004 therefore, it is expected that UBE teachers should be expressing outstanding qualities, teaching skills and good classroom management and the UBE was predictably to be, by now, a very outstanding education scheme. The programme in the past 17 years have neither received commendation nor has it presented manpower representative enough of its implementation strategies. This paper hence recommends that, the regular training of teachers and monitoring will sustain the implementation of the UBE scheme. Keywords: Teacher Training, Sustainability, Teaching practice.
