1 Title: FOREIGN AIDS AND ECONOMIC GROWTH IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: Okonta, Ewere Clinton & Oyegun Gbenga Ph.D
Abstract: This study empirically scrutinizes the impact of foreign aid (ODA) on economic growth (GDP) in Nigeria. Relying on time series data that spanned over a period 1980 to 2020. Here we also included net capital inflows (NCI); foreign direct investment (FDI); trade openness (TOP); and corruption perception index (CPI) as control variables. The study applied an error correction mechanism (ECM) estimation technique to the time series data to investigate the ODA-Growth relationship. Solow growth model was used to establish a link between theory and empirics. The outcomes of the study shows that official development assistance from multilateral financial institutions has no significantly effects on economic growth in Nigeria. The ECM result further shows that in the long-run, the relationship remains negative- this may be as a result of prevailing corruption and mis-management of aids by Nigeria government functionaries. The study, consequently midst others recommends that ODA should be channeled to productive sectors so as to complement current investments and attract new investments. The dynamic productive sector should not rely on low wages in search of an elusive foreign demand but instead need to be linked to the domestic economy. Policies and institutions that stimulate mutually public and private investment should be strengthened. Long-run sustainability of projects should be emphasized. 2 Title: TEXTUAL ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL MEDIA NETIZENS RESPONSE TO THE 2023 “OBIDIENT” CAMPAIGNS IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: Chamberlain Chinsom Egbulefu (Ph.D), Augustine Alabaayeni & Emeke Precious Nwaoboli
Abstract: This study is a textual analysis of social media netizens response to the 2023 “Obidient” Presidential campaign in Nigeria. The objectives of the study were to find out the extent to which social media was used in campaigning for Peter Obi presidency; establish the slant of social media netizens response to the 2023 Obidient campaigns; and examine the impact of social media netizens response to the 2023 Obidient campaigns. Ervin Goffman’s 1974 Framing theory was adopted while qualitative textual analysis was the research design. Using the multi-stage sampling technique, Facebook was chosen as social medium for the study and netizens response to the obedient campaigns were classified into themes and analysed. The study found that social media netizens heavily used social media to portray Peter Obi as a competent administrator with the capacity to transform Nigeria, and that their messages attracted sympathisers and supporters to join the fold, with an emphasis on his ability to unite the country, show respect for traditional culture and rulers, and bring positive change to Nigeria as his supporters have a great deal of trust in him in comparison to other contenders such as Bola AhmedTinubu and Atiku Abubakar. Based on the findings, it was recommended, among other things, that to achieve overall success in the campaign, there is a compelling need for the Obidients to replicate such efforts on the ground, particularly in the rural and semi-rural areas where internet penetration is low, and given the fact that the bulk of votes usually come from there. 3 Title: FINANCIAL LIBERALISATION AND SAVINGS IN THE ANGLOPHONE WEST AFRICAN COUNTRIES.pdf
Author: Echebiri, Raymond Chidorom, Tochukwu Obiakor, & Sheriffdeen Tella
Abstract: The rate of savings in the Anglophone West African countries has been low over the years, resulting in their slow economic growth. Despite several efforts to stimulate savings, rate of savings still remained low in absolute and comparative terms in the countries. The study investigated the effect of financial liberalisation [gross domestic product (GDP), broad money supply (BMS) and deposit interest rate (DPR)] on gross domestic savings (GDS) in the Anglophone West African countries. The study adopted ex-post facto design, and annual data from 1996 to 2020 on the five Anglophone West African countries was sourced from World Development Indicators (WDI, 2020). Data was analyzed using Feasible Generalised Least Squares (FGLS) estimation technique. The study adopted the 5% level of significance. Findings of the study revealed that GDP and DPR had positive and significant effect on gross domestic savings in the Anglophone West African countries. This supports theoretical and empirical literature which posit that increase in income and interest rate induces more savings and vice versa. On the other hand, BMS had negative and insignificant effect on gross domestic savings. This finding controverts theoretical literature which holds that increase in money supply stimulates savings, but supports some empirical studies which posit that increase in money supply leads to reduction in savings. The study recommended that policy makers in the Anglophone West African countries should adopt and implement policies, programmes and projects that can contribute to rapid economic growth and ensure that the real deposit rate is positive at all times in order to stimulate savings in their domain. 4 Title: DIVERSIFICATION AND FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE OF QUOTED COMPANIES IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: Neoma Obiageli Nwoha & Sunday Nosa Ugbogbo
Abstract: The present research employed an ex-post facto research design. The study focused on a research population consisting of 169 publicly quoted companies listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE, 2018) over a span of 6 years (2013-2018). To obtain a representative sample, approximately 119 companies were selected using Yaro Yamanes estimated formula (1967) and stratified sampling techniques were utilized due to population heterogeneity. However, due to limited data accessibility, a random subset of thirty (30) firms was selected from the initial pool of 119 companies.Descriptive statistics and multiple regression analysis, aided by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), were employed to analyze the collected data. The studys findings indicated a positive and significant relationship between highly diversified companies and the financial performance of quoted companies in Nigeria. In contrast, moderately diversified companies displayed a positive but insignificant relationship, while undiversified companies showed a negative and insignificant relationship. Based on these findings, the study recommends that firms engage in diversification strategies to enhance their market stability and reduce dependency on a single product. This approach, in turn, has the potential to improve future profitability, enhance predictive capabilities, and strengthen financial stability by facilitating sound investment decision-making Keywords: Financial Performance, Diversification, Highly Diversified, Moderately Diversified and Undiversified View

Author: Oguh Festus A., Igbokwe Chidiebere U. & Ibobo Ezekiel O.
Abstract: This study investigated the effects of onboarding on job satisfaction in selected Deposit money banks’ in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The specific objective was to ascertain the effect of mentoring, induction and coaching on employee job satisfaction. The population of this research comprised of new employees of three deposit money banks operating in Benin City, Edo State. The three banks are Guaranty Trust Bank, First Bank and United Bank for Africa. The study applied structured questionnaires to a sample size of 105 respondents drawn using Taro Yamane from the employees of the selected companies. The data generated were analyzed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Descriptive statistics, such as frequencies, and means were used; inferential statistics such as Multiple Regression Analysis, was also used. The findings of the study showed that there is no statistically significant relationship between mentoring, and employee job satisfaction, but there is a statistically significant relationship between coaching and employee job satisfaction. Also, there is no statistically significant relationship between induction and employee job satisfaction. Based on the findings of this study, and in line with its specific objective, the companies have not put the necessary amount of emphasis and resources into the mentoring and induction of their new hires, they have only focused on coaching of their new employees. It is therefore recommended that there is need for an improvement in mentoring and the induction of their new employees. Also, the banks need to be consistent in their current coaching approach because of the benefits they stand to gain. Key Words: Onboarding, Mentoring, Coaching, Induction, Job Satisfaction. View
6 Title: THE IMPLICATIONS OF TREASURY SINGLE ACCOUNT ON THE BANKING SECTOR IN NIGERIA.pdf
Author: Otu, Christopher Awanyiam Godwin Nkenu & Ewa, Lawrence Obun
Abstract: This study examined the implications of treasury single account (TSA) on the banking sector in Nigeria. Specifically the study examined the effect TSA on economic growth of Nigeria, the effect of TSA on bank liquidity and the effect of TSA on financial transparency and accountability. Three 3 listed deposit money banks (DMBs) selected based on their CAMEL classification as big, medium and small banks were used as case study. These include First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Access Bank Plc and Unity Bank Plc. Primary data were collected through the administration of a well validated structured five scale Likert questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using ordinary least square simple regression. Findings revealed that the TSA exert a positively and significantly effect on economic growth in Nigeria; had adverse effects on commercial banks liquidity in Nigeria and has helped in promoting financial transparency and accountability in the Nigerian banking sector. In line with these findings, it was recommended that the financial regulators, including the CBN, should also be proactive and institute measures to correct any lapses or negative impact of the policy, as no law or measure is foolproof. The tendency of the TSA policy having negatively effect on commercial banks thereby possibly leading to massive job losses should be urgently addressed. There is the need for strict compliance with the directive on TSA by the relevant government organizations. The regulatory framework of the TSA policy should be strengthened as this would help improve financial prudence, reduce if not minimize corruption, enthrone transparency and accountability from our leaders which would in turn have a positive effect on the economy of Nigeria. Author: Dr. Neba, Ambesi Polycarp & Ekhaese Jude Ighiwiyisi
Abstract: This research paper provided detailed examinations and analyses of Nigeria’s foreign policy during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration (2015 to date). Foreign policies are measures developed by a state to achieve her national interest in the international system. National interest of Nigeria includes defence of sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, internal cohesion, national unity, security and economic prosperity. Therefore, this paper examined how the administration has fared in achieving the national interest with regards to Buhari’s three points agenda of fighting insecurity, corruption and recovery of looted funds as well as economic revival. The study examined the international relations engagements by the Buhari’s Administration from inception in May 2015 with various countries. The research relied only on secondary data such as journals, text books, televisions/media houses, newspapers, internet sources and magazines, thus qualitative data analyses method was adopted for this study and it was found out that due to dwindling oil prices, devaluation of Naira and majorly the dependency syndrome, President Buhari’s administration could not achieve much in economic development of Nigeria. This paper concluded that Buhari’s administration fell short in achieving his administration’s agenda before the end of his tenure in 2023. This study focused on leveraging social media influencers on Instagram and Facebook to address Covid-19 vaccine hesitancy in Nigeria. It examined the effectiveness of using influencers as communication agents to disseminate accurate vaccine information, engage audiences, and promote positive attitudes towards vaccination. The study also explored the ethical considerations, challenges, and opportunities associated with this approach in mass communication for public health. Through content analysis and mixed-methods approaches, this study analyzed data from Nigerian social media influencers posts, stories, and comments on Instagram and Facebook. A sample of 10 influencers was selected, and their content related to Covid-19 vaccines was examined. The effectiveness of influencer-led campaigns was assessed by evaluating audience engagement, knowledge gain, and intent to vaccinate among followers. Results showed that influencer-led ads produced significant levels of audience engagement, increasing followers likelihood of learning more and their self-reported intent to be vaccinated. Influencer contents personalized and personable qualities encouraged favorable attitudes towards immunization. The study found that social media influencers degrees of transparency and disclosure practices varied widely. Findings also indicated that influencers had trouble dispelling false information about vaccines on social media. Significant challenges included the negative attitudes, doubts, and opposition from some audience groups against vaccinations. Providing thorough vaccination information was also difficult due to social media sites character limits and their fast-paced nature. In conclusion, the study highlights the intertwined nature of social media influencers, follower perspectives, and socio-economic concerns in shaping the discourse around Covid-19 vaccination. Author: Okhegwae, Fredrick, Iti, Omolola Akintibu, Irheren, Kevins Akhigbe & Okhegwae, Constance Enoguese
Abstract: The study aims at newspapers coverage of community news. This study has established the fact that the newspaper can achieve its purpose if it adheres strictly without bias to its ethical standard; by giving adequate coverage to grass root stories with equal importance to its counterpart (Status-quo media) in its features, editorial and news stories. The major crux of this study is to examine the degree of coverage cum prominence given by the national dailies in galvanising community news. Two newspapers were studied; the Punch cum Vanguard. The two newspapers have national focus. The Punch and Vanguard newspapers are privately owned and they both helped to answer the research questions raised. The edition of both papers (January - June, 2018). The purposive sampling method was used to content analyse. Hence, content analysis was the instruments used for data gathering. The gatekeeping and development media theories were adopted; the findings revealed that, national dailies in Nigeria have fallen short of their responsibilities by giving more prominence to national issues than the supposedly locus of development (community). Hence, no nation can be said to be developed without incorporating those at the periphery or grassroots adequately in the scheme of things. Based on the study; the researcher believed that, the media should jettison the urban centrality syndrome, by fostering a perfect equilibrium in the content of news stories reported in their mediums; that media contents are too elitist and foreign to serve the grassroots needs, hence, it should be discouraged to give rural dwellers a sense of belonging. Author: Olufemi, Gina Oghogho & Clement Edojor Ozele
Abstract: This paper analyses the effect of firm characteristics on sustainable growth of listed industrial goods firms in Nigeria from 2011 to 2020, leaning on the Ex Post Facto research design. The study utilizes time series secondary data using panel least square regression technique. The annual data utilized for the study were tested for multicollinearity as well as test for heteroscedasticity with Stata econometric package. Findings from the study show that dividend policy has a positive insignificant effect on sustainable growth and working capital has a positive significant effect on sustainable growth of the industrial goods firms under study. The study concludes that only the variable of working capital appears to significantly influence sustainable growth rate of industrial goods firms in Nigeria. The paper recommended that management of these industry goods companies should advocate for policies that will enhance swift conversion of inventory to cash to improve firm growth. This could range from the provision of cash discount to customer to encourage purchases. Keywords: Firm characteristics, Sustainable growth, Dividend policy and Working capital. View

Author: Nwokoro, Catherine Isioma, Ph.D, Akpan Udo, Ph.D & Peter, Margaret Akwaowo
Abstract: Multiculturalism within the Nigerian context is a serious concern especially drawing from the diverse ethnic groups, tribes, cultures and its influence on the people. The volatile state of affairs in Nigeria when it concerns insecurity is an area of concern which came to limelight with Boko Haram attacks and such news reports on insecurity did not abate as it is even an everyday occurrence ranging from kidnappings, herdsmen killings, maiming of properties and lots more. It is even worse presently with virtually every news bulletin containing insecurity. It then leads to the question- does the cultural background of news reporters determine the independence level of news reports towards insecurity news reports? This research hopes to find out if the ethnicity of a news reporter influences his/ her reports and if such determines the level of objectivity of the news story disseminated to the audience. To guide this study, the following objectives were raised: to ascertain the independence level of news reporters in Radio Benue Corporation (95.0FM); to investigate if the cultural background of news reporters from Radio Benue Corporation (95.0FM) influences their insecurity news reports and identify the major aspect of insecurity news reports by reporters in Radio Benue Corporation (95.0FM). The methodology used for this study was qualitative with an interview conducted on a sample of 12 employees who are in the editorial and programmes department out of a total of 120 employees in the radio station while the theories used were Social Responsibility and Sociocultural theories. In conclusion, the study found that, the multicultural background of reporters from this radio station does not influence insecurity news reports. Author: Ifeanyi S. Mgbataogu (PhD), Emeka J. Okereke (PhD) & Nnenda V. Eresu-Deekae (PhD in View)
Abstract: Motivated by the lofty and indispensable roles the commercial banks play in the economy and the consequent need to operate within acceptable standards of governance for consistent profitable operations. This study sets out to empirically ascertaining the influence of corporate governance captured by board representation, board size, audit independence, ownership concentration, board activism and performance of selected listed banking firms in Nigeria aptly captured by the capital adequacy component of CAMELS (capital adequacy, asset quality, management efficiency, earnings ability, liquidity and sensitivity to market risk) rating of Domestic Statistically Important Banks in Nigeria. Utilizing time series data sourced from the annual reports of the banks The study employed ex-post facto research design. The panel random effect regression technique was carried out to reveal the short run relationship at the 95% confidence interval. One notably striking observation from the regression results is the consistency of board representation as well as board size in statistically significantly influencing all the constituent components of the CAMELS ratings. For instance, the results provide evidence that in the short run, that board representation and board size have a significant positive effect on capital adequacy of quoted deposit money banks in Nigeria during the period of study. Therefore, the study concludes that governance in banking business entities strongly affects their performance. We therefore recommend among others that board size should be maintained at an optimal level to enhance performance. Also, regular meetings of the audit committee as much as being encouraged, the quality of such meetings and their attendant resolutions should even be scrutinized to ensure the effectiveness and desired impact on general performance of the banks.
