12 Title: ON THE DIMENTIONS OF GANDHIS SEVEN DANAGERS TO HUMAN VIRTUES IN THE PRACTICE OF HUMAN RESOURCES IN NIGERIA
Author: JOHN MARK
Abstract: Abstract The paper avers that Human Resources in Nigeria have not attained sustainability as there are still continual disputes between management and its publics. The reason probably stemmed from Gandhian thesis that many of the work places, especially in third world countries are more organizational than human. The snag then is that organizations cannot thrive except the human resource desk attains sustainability. The paper then submits for Gandhis seven dangers to human virtue, arguing that one way human resource practice in Nigeria can attain sustainability is to alter its philosophy of profiteering rather than truth, Justice and service for all. In other words, the paper posits, with the use of content analysis, that one major problem clients face from service providers is their non-compliance to truth and trust. As Gandhi put it, humanity first before profiteering. Concluding then, the paper recommends that sustainable Human Resource Management (SHRM) should be a distinct course of its own for scholars to explore as a look at it in the context of Gandhian thesis, will better sharp the phase of Nigerian economy and the new crop of human resource students that are being churned out. Keywords: sustainable human resource practice, Gandhis seven dangers to human virtue. ... more
13 Title: TAX PLANNING AND SHAREHOLDERS WEALTH MAXIMIZATION OF DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA
Author: OGBONNA, UDOCHUKWU GODFREY, EZE EMMANUEL & TITUS ORJI
Abstract: Abstract This work studied the relationship between tax planning and shareholders’ wealth maximization among deposit money banks in Nigeria. A disaggregated approach was adopted in the study by considering the distributional effects of both effective tax rate and book tax difference as the main tax planning components of the banks in Nigeria. A panel of 10 deposit money banks was used for the analysis for the period of 2010 to 2021 (12 years). The Random Panel estimation technique was adopted for the empirical analysis. There is general evidence from the study that tax planning acts as a strategic wedge by banks in Nigeria in delivering relevant pecuniary benefits to shareholders among Nigerian banks. Specifically, the study inferred that the book to tax difference of the banks has no significant impact on return on equity of the banks. This implies that efficiency in long-term tax planning does not influence shareholders’ wealth maximization among Nigerian deposit money banks. Similarly, effective tax rate has no significant impact on return on equity among deposit money banks in Nigeria. Thus, improving the current tax planning capacity of banks has capacity to promote shareholders’ wealth through improved Return on Equity (ROE). Furthermore, the size of banks has a significant direct and indirect impact on return on equity of deposit money banks in Nigeria. The indirect impact is attained through improved effective tax rate of the banks. Keywords: Effective tax rate, Return on equity, book tax difference ... more
