1 Title: URBAN PLANNING REGULATIONS AND COMPLIANCE PERFORMANCE AMONG PROPERTY DEVELOPERS IN SELECTED CITIES IN THE NIGER DELTA
Author: Davies Tonte Joseph; Mbee, Daniel Mbee & Obafemi, Andrew
Abstract: The influx of people into the urban centres has increased the need for urban housing which private property developers have responded to by constructing both housing estates. The current study assesses urban planning regulations performance among property developers in the Niger Delta. The study adopted the survey research method. Registered property developers constituted the population for the study. The sample size for the study was 88. A census of all the listed populations was reached with a copy of the study instrument which was well-designed to capture the items for assessment Both primary and secondary data were used. The analysis was based on simple descriptive and inferential statistics. It is revealed by the study that 58% of property developers do not comply with urban planning regulations. The study also found that there is no significant difference in the compliance level of urban planning laws by developers across the south–south region as the p-value (1.000) is greater than the critical value (α = 0.05). The study recommends that the planning authorities compel property developers to obey planning laws urban using the instrumentality of the law. Complying with building laws will reduce urban blight and ultimately help to preserve the existing zoning arrangement. Keywords Urban, Indicators, Compliance, Housing, Development.... more

Author: Goodhope Chinenye Igwe (Ph.D) & Moses, Zechariah Olilanya Promise (PhD)
Abstract: This study examines deregulation of educational services and quality assurance in public secondary schools in Rivers State. Two research questions and two hypotheses guided the study. The study adopted the correlational design as the working design. The population comprised 247 principals from the 247 public secondary schools in Rivers State and a sample size of 185 principals drawn with multistage sampling approach representing 75% of principals. The principals responded to a structured validated instrument titled Deregulation of Educational Services Questionnaire (DESQ) and Quality Assurance Questionnaire (QAQ) designed by the researchers and the reliability indexes using cronbach alpha method were 0.77 and 0.74 respectively. Simple regression was used to answer the research questions while t-test associated with simple regression was used to test the null hypotheses. It was concluded that deregulation of facilities and supervision predicted 5.20% and 3.70% of quality assurance in public secondary schools in Rivers State. The study therefore recommended that the government should deregulate the provision of facilities and supervision to enhance effective teaching and learning in secondary schools in Rivers State. 6 Title: THE IMPACT OF AN INTEGRATED (REGIONAL) CAPITAL MARKET ON THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT OF EMERGING ECONOMIES: NIGERIA, SOUTH AFRICA AND KENYA
Author: Mpamugo, Chikwendu Samuel., Chigbu, E. Emmanuel., Oforegbunam T. Ebiringa & Aghalugbulam B. C. Akujuobi
Abstract: Abstract This study seeks to examine the impact of an integrated (regional) capital market on the economic development of emerging economies using Nigeria, South Africa and Kenya. The capital markets of emerging economies seem to have performed below expectation in terms of their contribution to economic growth and development despite apparent huge amount of money that have been spent to enhance the functionality of the markets in the affected countries. The objectives of this study is therefore to find out if an integrated (regional) capital market will have a positive and significant impact on the economic development of these countries. The study used secondary data and covered the period 1990 to 2018. The augmented dickey-fuller unit root test, Johansen’s co-integration test, and the error correction model were among the analytical tools used in the study. Panel data (pooled) regression analysis was also carried out. The findings revealed that human development index (a proxy for economic development), is a positive and insignificant function of ratio of market capitalization to GDP in both Nigeria and South Africa; while in Kenya it is a negative and insignificant function of market capitalization to GDP ratio. Again, in both Nigeria and South Africa, value of securities traded ratio and stock market turnover ratio exert positive and significant effect on human development index. In Kenya, while value of securities traded ratio exerts positive and significant effect on human development index, the effect of stock market turnover ratio is negative and significant. However, while all share index has a negative and significant effect on human development index in Nigeria, its effect on both South Africa and Kenya is positive and significant. The effect of the capital market on human development index was found to be generally positive and significant when pooled regression analysis was carried out. Based on the findings above, the study recommends that government and capital market regulatory authorities should establish strong and more transparent institutional and legal framework as well as support investment in human resources to engender efficiency in the allocation of available financial resources for investment purposes and create the platform that will lead to increased investment and promotion of best corporate practices that will restore investors’ confidence in the financial system and stimulate further economic growth and development. Abstract: Abstract This study examined cost management and operational efficiency of quoted firms in Nigeria. Specifically the study analysed effect of distribution cost, administrative cost and factory overhead cost on operational efficiency. A total number of ten quoted firms were sampled at random in the study and data were collected from annual report of the sampled firms over the period of 10 years spanning from 2010 to 2019. Data were analysed using panel based estimation techniques including pooled OLS, fixed effect and random effect estimation. Evaluation of estimators for consistency and efficiency was done via restricted F-test and Hausman test. Result showed that distribution cost has insignificant negative effect on operational efficiency -0.1390755(p> 0.05). Administrative cost also exert insignificant negative effect of operational efficiency -0.0087021(p > 0.05), while factory overhead cost has insignificant positive effect on operational efficiency 0.089898(p > 0.05). This study thus concluded that focusing on the management of distribution cost, administrative cost as well as factory overhead cost in the same period does not culminate into significantly improvement in operational efficiency of quoted firms Nigeria. Hence, quoted firms in Nigeria should redress their cost management strategies to further harness a wider scope of cost management that can engender significant improvement in operational efficiency looking forward Keyword: Cost Management, operation efficiency, quoted Firms, Nigeria. ... more
